Have a piece in mind?

Commission FAQ

Questions about custom work.

Straight answers before you write. Anything else, ask in your note.

How much does a commission cost?
Commissions are quoted per piece, once Adam knows the size, the quantity and the glaze. As a guide, everyday pieces in the shop start around $15 and large, complicated pieces run toward $200. The form asks for a budget range so the first reply can match what you have in mind.
How long does a custom order take?
It depends on the firing schedule. Every piece is thrown, trimmed and slow-dried, then bisque fired and glaze fired to cone 10, and a commission waits for a full kiln load. Adam gives you a timeline with the quote. Ask early for weddings and holidays.
Can I get a custom piece for Christmas?
Custom work is a spring project, not a December one, and it does not ship before Christmas. For a December gift, choose something finished in the shop and order it by October 25, or give the promise of a commission.
Is there a deposit?
Yes. Once you agree on the quote, a deposit holds your place in the next firing schedule.
Can you make a matching set?
Yes. Dinnerware is made in one glaze and sized to how you actually eat, in four, six or eight place settings. The pieces in a set are made to agree with each other, but they are thrown by hand and fired in a kiln, so no two are identical.
Can you add a name or a logo?
It can be done. The mugs Adam made for the Summers family each carry a stamped mountain mark with their name. Mention it in your first note and Adam will tell you what will work for your piece.
Which glazes can I choose?
Start with the glazes in the shop, like Numoku and the iron reds; every one is mixed, tested and recorded in the studio. Adam will tell you which suit the form you are after.
Will it look exactly like the photo I send?
Close, not identical. A photo of a piece you love helps more than a paragraph, and Adam will match the form and the feel. Glaze moves in the kiln and every piece is thrown by hand, so expect some variation. It is part of what makes the piece yours.
What custom work does Adam say no to?
He says yes when the piece is something he would make anyway, when it is meant to be used, and when you are comfortable with a kiln deciding some of the details. A request that pulls against the way he works gets an early, honest no, because a clear no is kinder than a reluctant yes that runs late.
Can I pick it up, or do you ship?
Both. Collect it at the studio in Logan by appointment, or have it wrapped by hand, insured and shipped within the US.
Do you take café and restaurant orders?
Yes. Mugs, cups and small plates in quantity, with the durability of high-fired stoneware. The wholesale page explains how café orders work.
