The details · Dig day

What a dig day looks like.

Red Utah clay held in a hand

Read the ground

Meet at the dig site. We run three field tests and everyone collects a small bag of clay.

Clay slurry poured into a drying cloth

Process it

Back at Adam's Logan studio, we slake, screen and dry clay together.

Adam marking test tiles

Make test tiles

You make tiles and mark them so we can measure shrinkage.

Fired test pieces

Get your results

Adam fires them. In 3 to 4 weeks you get your tiles and a results card.

An honest note about wild clay. Wild clay is something Adam is still learning and testing. Most of what he has dug so far has cracked, warped or melted along the way, and that is the point of testing. This class teaches you how to test. It does not hand you a finished recipe, and test tiles are for learning, not for food. Nothing in the shop is made with wild clay yet.

What to bring

  • Clothes that can get muddy
  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Water and a snack

Trowels, bags, tools and clay are provided.

Questions

Good to know.

Do I need experience?

No. Both classes are for beginners. Potters who already throw are welcome too.

Where do we meet?

Adam's studio in Logan. The address and the dig site are sent with your booking.

When do I get my pieces back?

About 3 to 4 weeks after class. Pick up in Logan by appointment, or we ship within the US for $10.

Is the clay we dig food safe?

Not as test tiles. Tiles are for learning how a clay behaves. Making safe everyday ware from wild clay takes many more tests.

What if it rains?

We move the dig to the next open date, or you can switch to the studio half only.

Can I cancel?

Full refund up to 7 days before. After that, you can move to another date.

Can I book a private group?

Yes. Birthdays, teams and families. Send a message through the contact page.
